EDM Machining

Electric discharge machining (EDM) is a machining process that uses electrical discharge to remove material from a workpiece. It is widely used in manufacturing industries for producing complex shapes and features that are difficult to obtain with conventional machining methods. EDM machining has three primary methods, namely wire EDM, sinker EDM, and drill EDM, which are summarized below.

1. Wire EDM:

Wire EDM, also known as wire cut EDM or WEDM, is a process that uses a thin wire as an electrode to remove material from the workpiece. In this process, a wire is fed continuously through the workpiece, while a spark discharge is generated between the wire and the workpiece to erode the material. The process uses Deionized water which acts as a semiconductor to ensure material is cut in a precise manner. Furthermore, it flushes out the debris that is generated from the cutting process. Wire EDM is commonly used for cutting complex shapes and contours in hard and exotic materials such as steel, stainless steel, titanium, tungsten, and Inconel.

2. Sinker EDM:

Sinker EDM, also known as ram EDM or plunge EDM, is a process that uses a shaped electrode to erode material from the workpiece. In this process, the electrode is immersed in a dielectric fluid and positioned close to the workpiece, while a spark discharge is generated between the electrode and the workpiece to erode the material. Sinker EDM is commonly used for producing deep cavities, small holes, and complex shapes such as hexagons, circles, and many others in hard and brittle materials such as ceramics and carbides.

3. Drill EDM:

Drill EDM, also known as hole popper EDM or fast hole EDM, is a process that uses a small-diameter electrode to drill precise holes in the workpiece. In this process, the electrode is positioned close to the workpiece, while a spark discharge is generated between the electrode and the workpiece to erode the material and form the hole. Drill EDM is commonly used for producing small, precise holes in hard and difficult-to-machine materials such as aerospace alloys and superalloys.
